- GPT-5 now has more thinking states to choose from
- Sam Altman has also confirmed an increase in rate limits for chatgpt plus subscribers
- GPT-5 launched less than a week ago for widespread criticism
The GPT-5 just got its first big change, and now users can choose between different modes when using the new model in Chatgpt.
Confirmed by Openai CEO, Sam Altman, on X earlier today, chatgpt users can now choose between auto, fast, thinking and thinking mini when using GPT-5.
Each new state offers another way for GPT-5 to, you guess it, think. “Auto” lets the GPT-5 decide how long to think, quickly “gives you immediate answers,” Think-Mini “thinks quickly, and” thinking “will take longer to think of better answers.
The change follows the mass base stroke related to GPT-5’s performance and will now give users more levels of performance to choose from. We have not yet tested all the new states of thinking; When Openai decided to limit choices and remove older models, the lack of variation was met with widespread criticism.
Openai has since returned to these decisions, made 4o available again for paid subscribers and added to the choice of more thinking skills in GPT-5 only cementing U-turn.
Updates for Chatgpt: You can now choose between “Auto”, “Fast” and “Thinking” for GPT-5. Most users want auto, but the extra control will be useful to some people. Rate boundaries are now 3,000 messages/weeks with GPT-5 thinking and then extra capacity on GPT-5 thinking …13 August 2025
3000 messages a week? Yes please
New thinking states are not the only changes that come to GPT-5. Altman also announced the increase in rate limits for the brand new AI model after dissatisfaction from Chatgpt Plus users paying $ 20/£ 20 a month to access the Premium level.
Earlier this week, Altman said the Chatgpt-5 Pro may also come to Plus subscribers, though he now seems to have backtracked and claim, “we haven’t meant to do it right now.”
The GPT-5 has not even been out for a week yet, but Openai has begun to correct the wrong at the first launch. With new rate boundaries and more choices in how long the AI model takes to respond with less or more thinking process, the company is trying to regain its user base confidence.
