Lahore has introduced dedicated lanes for cyclists and motorcyclists in a bid to improve road safety and traffic flow.
Officials say the initiative will help reduce accidents and ensure safer commuting for two-wheeler riders, Express News reported.
The project will be carried out in stages and eventually cover all major roads in the city.
In the first phase, a 10 kilometer cycle path will be constructed along Ferozepur Road, from Canal Road to Lahore Bridge. The lanes are marked with a distinctive green color to improve visibility.
The authorities believe that the adoption of this global model of urban infrastructure will lead to fewer accidents and smoother traffic movements.
The Punjab Chief Minister has directed officials to ensure high quality construction standards for the project.
Last week, several sections of Pakistan’s highways were closed due to heavy fog, causing significant traffic disruptions in parts of Punjab.
According to a statement from the motorway police, sections of the M2, M11 and M5 motorways were closed to ensure the safety of travellers, Express News reported.
The affected areas include the stretch from Lahore to Hiran Minar on the M2, from Sialkot to Lahore on the M11 and from Rahim Yar Khan to Rohri on the M5.
Saeed Imran Ahmed, a highway police spokesman, explained that dense fog reduces visibility, increasing the risk of accidents, especially when drivers fail to maintain lane discipline. He urged road users to be careful and follow traffic guidelines to avoid collisions.
The Highways Agency has advised travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys in the foggy conditions.
The closures are expected to remain in place until visibility improves.
The authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates on the status of the roadways.
