Half of women’s organizations in crisis zones risk closure within six months

Across 73 countries, 308 million people are now dependent on humanitarian help – a number that continue to rise. Women and girls are disproportionately influenced by these crises that face preventable pregnancy -related deaths, malnutrition and alarming levels of sexual violence.

Despite the growing need, the humanitarian system is facing serious financing deficits and threatens life -saving services for women and girls.

Programs suspended

According to a UN survey conducted among 411 women’s leaders and women’s rights organizations providing services in crisis areas, 90 percent have already been affected by financing cuts.

A staggering 51 percent has been forced to suspend programs, including those who support the survivors of gender -based violence.

The push to the brim reported nearly three-quarters of the organizations surveyed also having to dismiss the staff-many at significant levels.

Already underfunded even before the recent wave of cuts, female organizations act as a “lifeline” for women and girls, especially in crisis settings.

With these organizations, serving as cornerstones in humanitarian response, “Sofia Calltorp, head of the UN’s female humanitarian acts, threatens the situation” critical “as financing cuts threaten significant, life -saving services.

Local women’s leadership

Despite the growing challenges, female organizations remain unwavering – “leaders with courage, advocate for their community and rebuild life with resilience and determination,” the UN Equality Agency said.

In light of the conclusions, UN women recommend prioritizing and tracking direct, flexible and perennial financing for local women’s and women’s rights organizations whose work is threatened.

Placing local women’s leadership and meaningful participation in the center is a core column in a humanitarian reset. “Supporting and resource them is not only a matter of equality and rights, but also a strategic imperative,” said Mrs. Calltorp.
