- Sonos’ new Amp Multi is a sign that app issues ‘have been fixed’
- Hardware launches will “ramp up” in the second half of 2026, the report says
- Sonos wants customers to love it again
Sonos has just announced its first new products since the end of 2024: new Amp Multi amplifier for professional installations. It’s not just a new Sonos product: it’s a new dawn for the company. Sonos insiders tell Bloomberg, which reports that Sonos believes its app-related squabbles have come to an end.
Sonos “believes that the majority of bugs and issues that once plagued its mobile app have been resolved”, and the launch of the Amp Multi marks the end of “a deliberate hiatus in product launches… Hardware launches will increase in the second half of its 2026 financial year”.
It’s worth noting here that Sonos’ fiscal year ends in September, so it looks like the next eight months could be busy for the Sonos faithful.
What’s the story behind Sonos’ new hardware plans?
As far as we know, only one planned product, Sonos’ streaming video player, was outright canceled – but other products had been rumored and never materialised. And Sonos executives had talked about launching at least two new products a year, and that certainly wasn’t the case in 2025.
Sonos’ problems stemmed from the ill-fated upgrade of its app, a PR disaster that was still rumbling in early 2025: The upgrade turned out to be a downgrade for many users, and many of Sonos’ most vocal advocates were extremely unhappy about it.
Then-chief executive Patrick Spence was replaced by new chief executive Tom Conrad in January 2025, who said “we’ve let too many people down” and promised “to get us back on track [by] to get back to the innovation that is at the heart of Sonos’ incredible history.” The Amp Multi is the first new Sonos product on his watch.
The Amp Multi isn’t made for people like me – it’s a pro-level product for high-end installations – but it does indicate that Sonos is back in the ring, and that’s reason to be optimistic. Conrad has said that his goal is to get Sonos customers to expand their Sonos investment, and to do that, you have to make those customers happy.
As we reported last year, Sonos used to have the best word of mouth in tech; it seems Conrad intends to make it happen again.
