- December 2025’s Patch Tuesday updates broke MSMQ on Windows Server and enterprise Windows 10 systems and disrupted apps and IIS websites
- Microsoft is developing a fix, but says affected organizations should contact corporate support for a fix or rollback
- Reported issues include idle queues, failed writes, and spurious “insufficient resources” errors despite sufficient capacity
Microsoft is asking companies experiencing Message Queuing (MSMQ) issues to contact them directly for help with a solution.
The company recently released its December Patch Tuesday cumulative update, which appears to have broken MSMQ, causing problems in enterprise apps and Internet Information Services (IIS) websites.
MSMQ is a Windows service that enables applications to communicate by sending messages through queues. It allows reliable, asynchronous messaging between systems even when they are offline, helping to decouple applications and improve resiliency in distributed or enterprise environments.
No timeline for a fix
The issues with the patch appear to affect Windows 10 22H2, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016 users with KB5071546, KB5071544, and KB5071543 updates installed. Home users don’t seem to be affected by this – only business users.
“It is highly unlikely that people using Windows Home or Pro editions on personal devices will experience this issue. This issue primarily affects enterprise or managed IT environments,” Microsoft said.
“A fix is available for affected devices. To apply the fix and resolve this issue in your organization, contact Microsoft Support for business.”
Microsoft said it is currently working on a fix, but it is not yet complete. The company doesn’t have a deadline or timeline for when it plans to release the fix, so it’s possible we’ll have to wait until January 2026’s Patch Tuesday batch as well.
For now, IT administrators experiencing these issues should contact Microsoft’s business support department for help with a solution or even to roll back the installed updates.
In the call to companies, Microsoft said it is aware of various issues following the patch, including idle MSMQ queues, apps unable to write to queues, or websites returning “insufficient resources” errors. Some systems also seem to return “Insufficient disk space or memory” messages even though they have enough resources.
