Heads Rolls After Lyari -Tragedy

Karachi:

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that chief minister Murad Ali Shah has immediately suspended the Director General of Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and has constituted an investigative committee that will submit his report on the tragic incident within two days.

SHARJEEL MEMON expressed deep sorrow and grief over the tragic incident of building collapse in Lyari while approaching a press conference on Monday. He said chief minister Murad Ali Shah was chairman of an emergency meeting and decided that a strict act would be taken against irresponsible and corrupt officers and officials.

The Investigation Committee, led by Commissioner Karachi, has been instructed to immediately break down 51 extremely fallen buildings in the city. Another 588 uncertain buildings will also be inspected to ensure that dangerous structures are relocated and demolished in a timely manner.

Saeed Ghani declared that the affected families are given RS a million each as compensation. He also said that all officers who have been published in the affected area since 2022 will be included in the investigation and a case will be registered against officers whose negligence is proven.

Homemade Minister Lanjar declared that action would be taken against those responsible for criminal negligence.

In response to a question, the senior minister said the government is reviewing the situation in slums and notes that 740 buildings across Sindh require repairs.

He added that moving residents would not pose a problem as similar events were implemented successfully during the Covid-19 pandemic and for flood victims.

As an answer to a question, Saeed Ghani said illegal constructions is a serious question in Karachi, and it is the responsibility of Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) to prevent them. He added that changes have been sought to the SBCA rules and proposals have been sought within two weeks to enable effective action against illegal constructions and abandoned buildings.

He added that the government is also considering whether the authority to demolish buildings should remain with SBCA or be handed over to a private institution.

Senior Minister Sharjeel was accompanied by Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani and Executive and Tax Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla.
