Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heat wave alarm that predicts a sharp increase in temperatures across the country from April 13 due to a high pressure system developing in the upper atmosphere.
Southern Regions-Inclusive Sindh, Southern Punjab and Balochistan are expecting to experience serious heatwave conditions from April 14 with day temperatures, which are probably hovering 6-8 ° C over the normal through April 18.
In the northern and central parts of the country-inclusive Islamabad, upper and central Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir-expect temperatures to rise by 4-6 ° C above normal. Temperatures at night are also expected to remain unusually high during the same period.
The excessive heat can trigger dust and wind storms and pose the risks of infrastructure such as electric poles, trees, vehicles and solar panels.
Authorities have called on the public, especially children, women and the elderly, to avoid sun exposure and remain hydrated. Farmers are advised to adjust crop management practices, especially wheat harvesting, and ensure the protection of livestock.
The MET Office also warned that the rising temperatures can speed up the snow in the northern regions, increasing the risk of flooding between April 14 and 18. Relevant departments have been placed with high alarm to monitor conditions and take preventative measures.
