The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has warned the public about a significant increase in cyber attacks in Pakistan, highlighting the growing sophistication of malicious actors using various misleading tactics.
Their tactics include fake links, QR codes and phishing messages, to pilfer sensitive data and communicating false information.
In a post of X, HEC emphasized the critical need for increased vigilance in the digital area.
“Cyber attacks are increasing. Hackers are using fake links, QR codes and phishing messages to steal your data,” the post read. “Do not click on unknown links. Check sources. Use Antivirus & MFA (Multifactor Authorization). Your caution protects you and Pakistan’s digital space.”
The warning comes in the midst of mounting reports of people who are targeted through various online platforms.
HEC outlined several common methods used by cyber attacks via an illustration on social media.
According to the Commission, attackers are fooling users via:
- “Fake URLs that look like real sites – often using lookalike -signs or shortened links
- Phishing — messages that copy designs and logos from trusted institutions
- Compromised accounts on social media spreading harmful links
- Suspicious WhatsApp/SMS forward that encourages you to click Pressing
- Infected sites and ads that hide dangerous downloads
- QR codes that redirect to malicious sites
- Files from shady platforms with embedded harmful links ”
HEC calls for protective measures
In light of this escalating threat, HEC strongly advises to individuals to adopt the following protective measures:
- Do not click on unknown links – hover to confirm first.
- Get updates from the official government or NCERT channels.
- Do not rely on forwarded messages or random QR codes.
- Use Antivirus, Enable Multi-Factor Authorization, and update your passwords.
HEC emphasized that individual caution plays an important role not only in protecting personal data, but also to protect “Pakistan’s digital spaces” from malicious activities.
By remaining vigilant and adopting these preventive measures, citizens can reduce their risk of becoming a victim of these rising cyber threats significantly.
