- Disney+ and Hulu users close their accounts over Disney’s handling of Jimmy Kimmel Live Saga
- The American Talk Show Host Program was indefinitely suspended over comments he made about Charlie Kirk
- The conservative political activist was murdered on the 10th of September in Utah
Disney is facing a large setback from Disney+ and Hulu users over the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and its host.
In recent days, shards of Entertainment Hospital’s fanbase have taken social media to express their disgust over Disney’s handling of the situation. And in an attempt to get the Hollywood institution to sit up and take notice, many have not only confirmed that they have canceled their subscriptions to two of the world’s best streaming services, but have called on others to do the same.
Kimmel, whose talk show in the evening has been running for almost 24 seasons since its debut in January 2003, was pulled out of the air on Monday, September 15 for comments he made about political activist Charlie Kirk. The free -speaking conservative was murdered during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10th.
In the wake of Kimel’s comments, Brendan Carr, president of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), threatened that ABC would have legislative consequences if it did not act. In the hours that followed Carr’s warning, two of ABC’s largest affiliated companies in Nexstar and Sinclair confirmed that they would stop broadcasting Kimmel’s show. On the evening of September 15, ABC announced that Kimel’s Hosting privileges had been “indefinitely” removed.
In the midst of the wider political and cultural Fallout around the freedom of the press and freedom of expression itself has several Hollywood -creative chastised Disney, ABC, Nexstar and Sinclair to look to bend the knee to FCC and by proxy to the Trump administration.
According to the Washington Post, a number of actors, directors and producers have expressed indignation of the suspension of Kimmel and his show. Going one step further, Lost Co -creator Damon Lindelof went to Instagram on Thursday, September 18 (as reported by WRAP) to state that he would not work for Disney or its subsidiaries again until Kimmel was reinstated.
Tatiana Maslany, Star of Marvel TV show She-Hulk: Attorney by Lawwhich was only sent on Disney+ in mid -2022, however, has undoubtedly been the most vocal critic. Posting on his Instagram story Thursday (thanks to X/Twitter for the screen), Maslany called on his 500,000 followers to boycott Disney-owned streaming platforms in an attempt to force the entertainment giant to go back his decision.

And that’s what some of Maslany’s fans, plus many other furious subscribers, have been doing since the saga began.
Threads on Reddit pages, such as R/Television and R/Entertainment-This, are only two of several threads on these under-reddits filled with comments from annoying users who have said they have closed their accounts or plans to cancel their subscriptions in the near future. It includes people who were signed up for Disney+ and Hulu, plus other services that require a subscription to use, such as National Geographic, ESPN and eg now.
Some even go so far as to say that they will also boikot other Disney-owned properties, including Disneyland Resorts, Disney Cruise Liners and the company’s merchandise.
Reddit is not the only place people threaten to boycott Disney in the immediate and long term. Users on X/Twitter, Instagram and Resetera -Forums do exactly that.
According to a Redditor (see the embedded post below) that says they used to work for Disney, there is a way to cancel your Disney+ subscription that has a greater impact on the company than just closing your account via online funds as well.
It is understandably the big question: Will some of this work?
At the last count in June sat Disney’s combined subscriber figure for Disney+ and Hulu of 183 million. It is obvious, as it is to say, it is a large number, unless tens of thousands of millions of users close their accounts, it is unlikely that this boycott will significantly affect Disney’s income streams.
According to a report from September 18 by Bloomberg, Disney leaders will meet Kimmel to discuss his and his shows futures in the near future. If a compromise cannot be reached, it is possible that more subscribers can move away from Disney+ and its sibling platforms. However, whether it will be a big enough number to get Disney to sit up and take warning is still to see.
