Frames are best known for its modular laptops that can be customized to suit your needs and, unlike many of today’s computers, can also be easily repaired. The company has just revealed its latest notebook, The Framework Laptop 12, which has us super created, but even better than it is the company’s first desktop system.
It is called (as you may have guessed) Framework Desktop, the new product is a 96.8 mm x 205.5 mm x 226.1 mm, 4.5-liter, 3.1 kg mini-PC. If you are wondering how small it is, the image above shows it next to a banana to scale.
Frames Desktop DIY edition, which is available for pre-ordering now with shipping expected in the 3rd quarter of 2025, is aimed at users who want a high-performance, easily upgradable mini-PC with AI capacities but do not want to blow up the kind of cash rival systems like Apple’s Mac-Studio and NVIDIA’s digits, 1099.
Very customizable
Because it is from frames, the device is very adaptable. The system has two processor settings. AMD Ryzen AI Max 385 has 8 kernels, 16 threads, a 3.6 GHz base watch, a 5.0 GHz boost and 32 MB L3 cache, while Ryzen AI Max+ 395 increases this to 16 kernels, 32 threads, a 3.0 GHz basic watch, a 5.1 GHz Boost and 64mb L3 Cache.
Both processors have built -in GPUs, with AI MAX 385 running up to 2.8 GHz with 32 calculation units, and AI Max+ 395 reaches 2.9 GHz with 40 computer devices. A onboard NPU delivers 32 tiles and up to 50 peaks of performance.
Memory options include 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB LPDDR5X-8000, depending on the processor. Storage is delivered through two NVME PCIE 4.0 M.2 slots with a maximum capacity of 8TB per Castle. The main table follows the Mini-ITX form factor and the system supports up to four screens. Connection includes AMD RZ717 Wi-Fi 7, Realtek RTL8126 5Gbit Ethernet, HDMI 2.1, Displayport 2.1, USB-C with USB4 and USB-A 3.2 Gen 1.
Cooling options include noctua and Cooler Master fans. A custom cooling plate with six copper heating pipes and aluminum fins is included. The 400W Flexatx power supply meets ATX 3.0 standards and has an effective cooling fan with a zero rotation.
The case is built with 30% recycled plastic by consumer and 50% recycled aluminum. One thing we especially like is the custom front panel that has spaces for 21 tiles so you can dress it up how you want, and there is also a choice of side panels – black or transparent.
