Michael Vick took the college football world by storm during his prominent race at Virginia Tech. He continued to play in the NFL for 13 seasons, and after a career in television spread, Hokies turned to coaching.

Vick is only three matches in his opening season in Norfolk State, but speculation has already begun to swirl that he could have his eyes on his Alma Mater.

Last week, Virginia Tech signed ways of head coach Brent Pry after a 0-3 start to the season.

But Vick makes it clear that he is focused on the current task – not future potential coaching opportunities.

“This team has to follow my lead,” Vick told HBCU Gameday. “My primary focus right now is Norfolk State. That’s all we can focus on. I hope they don’t read newspaper clippings or look at what’s happening on the social sides because I don’t. We’ve got Sacred Heart this week. That’s the most important thing in our lives right now.”

Vick’s interest in coaching dates back to several years back.

Before he took the main coach job in his original state of Virginia, Vick worked as a coaching trainee under Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid. In 2019, he served as Atlanta Legend’s offensive coordinator in the now closed alliance of the American Football League.

In 2017, Vick expressed hope of a day’s learning of Reid. “But if I could train with someone, I would very much like to start with Andy if there was an option. Obviously I would love it with (Atlanta) Falcons. So we’ll see how things are going,” Vick said in May 2017 during a performance on “The Howard Eskin Podcast.”

Vick completed his college career with 3,074 passing yards and 20 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. Vick, who developed a reputation for his ongoing skill, also recorded 16 rushing touchdowns in his time in a Hokies uniform.

During a Christmas Day game against Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson ran in 87 yards to surpass VICK on NFL’s list of all-time quarterback, rushing the Yards List.

Falcons chose Vick with the No. 1 total election in the NFL draft in 2001.

Norfolk State enters its game against Sacred Heart on September 20 with a 1-2 record.
