It is a repeat of the last T20 World Cup final as India take on South Africa in their first Super 8 clash. Both teams arrive unbeaten and have rarely fumbled – apart from the match between South Africa and Afghanistan, which went into a second Super Over.
Even as hosts, India won’t quite have home advantage as South Africa have played three of their four group stage matches on Ahmedabad’s flat wicket, which averages a first-innings score of 192 so far in this tournament – meaning we can expect a high-scoring encounter.
Speaking of which, India’s batting approach in their match against the Netherlands got a little out of control, especially as Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav didn’t quite bring the heat while batting first. That needs to change if India are to challenge South Africa’s hard-hitting lineup, with most of their batsmen showing good form.
One of the things to watch out for in this match will be South Africa’s plans against India’s openers. While Ishan Kishan is in great touch, Abhishek Sharma has scored three ducks in three matches and has struggled against right-arm off-spin. So there is a big chance that Aiden Markram can open the bowling – just like Aryan Dutt did for Holland and Salman Agha did for Pakistan against India.
India will also have to think carefully about their combination. The decision around playing Washington Sundar will be interesting. It could end up being a toss-up between him and left-arm spinner Axar Patel, especially given South Africa’s mix of right- and left-handers.
