The Turkish Detective is a crime drama thriller set in modern Istanbul, where three detectives – Cetin Ikmen, Mehmet Suleyman and Ayse Farsakoglu – investigate and solve murder cases across the city. Adapted from the Inspector İkmen novels by author Barbara Nadel, the show uses real Istanbul locations, offering viewers a fresher setting than the usual European backdrops.
While Ikmen is an old-fashioned detective who trusts his intuition and is warm and witty, Mehmet is more of an “outsider” who grew up in London. He is more procedural and professional in his approach. Ayse, on the other hand, represents the younger generation of detectives who embrace challenges and leadership and often act as the voice of reason in the group.
With each episode running around 50 minutes, the cases usually span two episodes each. In addition to this, Mehmet’s personal history and Ikmen’s family dynamics remain a constant thread throughout the series, adding emotional depth and continuity. The creators also use Istanbul as a character in its own right, with busy streets and neighborhoods influencing the detective work on the ground.
