Karachi:

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced on Wednesday that the Hub Dam Water Supply project will inaugurate on August 13.

Wahab, who spoke with media outside the Supreme Court Karachi register, said propaganda was spread using old videos regarding the new channel that delivers water from Hub Dam to the city.

“After 22 years, it is due to the efforts of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) that the city is receiving additional water,” he said.

He said the project, which was completed at a price of RS12.8 billion within a record time of 10 months, is ready for inauguration. “If the propaganda was true, this inauguration would not happen,” he said.

The mayor clarified that the work on the project has been completed and that the trial is the standard procedure before launching major initiatives. “Such questions are common in specific work, and the purpose of testing is to discover and solve problems in advance,” he said.

Wahab added that a one -year warranty period has been set after completion, after which the contractor is responsible for any required repairs. He rejected accusations against the project as baseless.

“All standards were maintained during the construction. Noise from propaganda is drowning the news of further water supply to the city,” he said.

“Propaganda is spreading to sabotage the water supply project.”

He said the HUB dam had previously delivered 100 million gallons of water daily to Karachi, but due to a 45-year-old transmission system, supply had dropped to 60 million gallons a day. “The new channel project will again supply 100 million gallons of water daily,” he said. “After this, the old channel will be repaired. When both systems are functional, the water supply from Hub to Karachi will be doubled.”

The project is expected to benefit residents of District West, Keamari and Central.

When commenting on federal funding, Wahab referred to previous statements from the governor of Sindh. “He said on TV that RS40 billion has been received from the federal government. I remind him that he had promised RS100 billion. If RS40 billion has been received, transfer them to the KMC account and serve the city.”

He also criticized the Muttahida Qaumi movement (MQM) and said “China-cutting”, country commercialization and resource planning are the remains of its era. “We also remember body bags, extortion and kidnappings for ransom,” he said. “The basic problems of the city began in MQM’s time.”

Wahab expressed his willingness to work with other parties to the city’s development. “The hope of the city is bound to its political leaders,” he said. “We want chaos to end. Everyone has to work together to improve Karachi.”

He added, “I’m ready to sit with MQM, Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) or Jamaat-e-Islami to improve the city.”
