Paris: Hundreds of Paris Saint-Germain fans poured into the streets of Paris on Saturday night to celebrate their club’s first ever Champions League title.
While most supporters cheered, sang and danced peacefully, police arrested almost 300 people after some parties became bully. Fireworks were set off and clashes broke out near famous places such as Champs-Élysées and Parc des Princes Stadium.
Police used water cannons to control crowds as the night of joy was tense in parts of the city.
The Paris police said Scrub broke out near the city’s Champs-Élysées Avenue and PSG’s Parc des Princes Stadium, where 48,000 had seen the 5-0 win against Inter Milan in Munich on large screens.
Most of the nearly 300 people detained were suspected of possession of fireworks and caused by disturbance, Paris police said.
AFP journalists saw police use a water cannon to stop a quantity reaching Arc de Triomphe.
“Problems at Champs-Élysées were looking to create events and repeatedly came into contact with the police by throwing large fireworks and other items,” police said in a statement.
Outside of Paris, police said a car that was careful in fans celebrating PSG’s victory in Grenoble in southeastern France, leaving four people wounded, two of them seriously.
All of these wounded were from the same family, police said.
The driver handed over to the police and was arrested.
A source close to the investigation said it was believed that the driver had not acted on purpose.
In Paris, most fans showed their joy in singing and dancing on the streets, with cars that sound their horns after their team won the biggest award in European club football for the first time in their history.
A 20-year-old PSG supporter, Clément, said, “It’s so good and so deserving! We have a song talking about our fight and it hasn’t always been easy.
But we got our faith back this year with a team without stars. They are 11 guys playing for each other. “
French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said he would host the victorious players on Sunday to congratulate them.
In a separate message of X, Macron paid tribute to a “day of glory for PSG”.
“Bravo, we’re all proud,” he wrote. “Paris is the capital of Europe tonight.”
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo paid tribute to it as a “historic” victory.
The PSG team holds a victory parade at Champs-Élysées on Sunday, when tens of thousands of supporters are expected to gather to catch a glimpse of their recurring heroes.
