The release of GPT-4.5 for Chatgpt naturally leads to questions about how the model is compared to its many rivals. After comparing it to GPT-4o and getting some ambiguous results in terms of which model is preferred, I decided to go for a more direct competitor, Google Gemini, specifically the latest Google Gemini Flash 2.p
GPT-4.5 claims to be better at emotional understanding and offer fewer hallucinations than has been the case in the past. The Gemini Flash 2.0 is meanwhile Google’s latest iteration of its quite successful set of AI models capable of juggling with text, images, audio and even video inputs. To put them both to the test, I came up with four requests that reflected typical things that an average person may really need help with.
Weekend travel
At first it was planning a quick weekend trip. I asked both AI Chatbots about: “Plan a weekend for Catskills, including hiking recommendations and dining options and accommodation options.”
Chatgpt 4.5 whipped a nice route that suggested several hikes on different trail difficulties and durations along with nearby eateries and a place to live that had the mood of a cozy, relaxed weekend. It also offered some extra advice to get there. Gemini also had lots of good hiking and dining room recommendations, but its only advice on places to live were cities in the general area, so not so proactively in its answer.
Translation in everything
I decided to try a simple translation test next as it is always a popular use of AI -Chatbots. I asked the two AI -Chatbots about: “Translate the phrase ‘good morning’ to French, Spanish and Japanese.” As you can see above, the only difference is the links from GPT-4.5. So for basic translation between widespread language, there really is no bigger difference.
Laughing AI
Then came the humor test and asked each AI about: “Tell me a joke about artificial intelligence.” GPT 4.5 amused me with the grainy word game: “Why did AI go to the Art School? Because it would learn to draw its own conclusions.” Gemini went with an equally silly word game, “Why did Ai broke up with her chatbot boyfriend? Because she continued to give the scripted answer!” Gemini’s joke is not fantastic, but I would put it on the same level as GPT-4.5 in terms of actual humor.
Weather measure
I ended with a classic question about weather here in Nyack, New York. This one drew the biggest difference in answers. Gemini just gave the current weather, but GPT-4.5 made an hourly measurement with pictures that indicated the weather along with the words.
Match Met
After all this test, I have to admit that I can’t honestly say that one of AI -Chatbots is better than the other. GPT-4.5 and Gemini had some differences, especially with the weather option, but otherwise you would not notice unless you are also the kind of person who thinks there is a huge difference between coke or pepsi. You get answers, you get a mild entertainment and you probably still end up double control of google or ask a real person just to be sure.
