Iconic Monal Restaurant falls in neglect

Islamabad:

When located majestically on top of Pir Sohawa, Monal Restaurant stood as one of Islamabad’s most iconic landmarks. Over the years it became more than a dining room – it was a symbol of Pakistan’s hospitality and natural splendor. Tourists from all over the world, diplomats and locals flowed to Monal to enjoy its panoramic views, authentic cuisine and the unique experience of eating over the clouds. For many, it was a proud showcase of Pakistan’s cultural wealth.

However, the closure of Monal of the former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa changed drastically the fate of this hilltop pearl. At that time, the Supreme Court declared established illegally and quoted its construction on protected Margalla National Park country. While the court’s order may have been motivated for environmental reasons, demand has shocked and sad many.

Today, the space that was once associated with family gatherings, parties and international tourism is reportedly a hub of indecency and immoral. Videos and reports circulating on social media suggest that the abandoned premises are abused for nude performance, vulgar shows and activities that not only undermine the holiness of the site, but also spots Islamabad’s cultural and moral image.

This tragic transformation has created widespread anger and dismay. “When Monal was operational, it was a symbol of pride. Families felt safe, and visitors left with a positive impression of Pakistan. Now it has become the opposite – a shameful sight,” says a affected resident.

Critics claim that although the closure may have been intended to protect the environment, the decision was lacking foresight. Instead of preserving the country or reusing it for constructive use, the closure has created a vacuum, enabling immoral activities to flourish uncontrollably.

The irony is sharp: a place that was once celebrated to bring families together and promote tourism has now become synonymous with indecency. This raises serious questions about governance, enforcement and the consequences of decisions made without considering practical realities. Islamabad, known for its peaceful beauty and cultural modesty, cannot afford to let such a deterioration continue.

Authorities must act quickly – either by recovering and rehabilitating the site or by establishing strict supervision to ensure that it does not remain a breeding ground for moral and social decay. The story of Monal acts as a precaution: Without vision and responsible planning, even the most beloved landmarks can fall into ruin, leaving only regret and embarrassment.
