Welcome to another Icymi (In Case You Missed It) recap that we do every week to make sure you’re completely caught up with all the big stories that broke in the world of tech over the past seven days.
It’s been a bumper week this week – as it is every week – and we’ve seen a major upgrade to ChatGPT, a new retro film camera from Kodak, an update on the US ban on DJI, a tease about the ‘future of wearables’ from Garmin and more.
7. Kodak gave us a gloriously retro 35mm film camera
Say hello to the Snapic A1, a new 35mm film camera from Kodak that offers multi-exposure shooting, a 25mm three-element glass lens, a maximum aperture of f/9.5, and manual focus, all wrapped in a retro aesthetic plastic body.
The camera tips the scales at just 117 grams, comes in two colors (Rhino Gray and Ivory White), and costs $99 (that’s around £75 / AU$150), with a neck strap and case included. Given the sample images provided, we’re also cautiously optimistic about performance.
6. Garmin teased the ‘future of wearables’
What is Garmin working on? One of the company’s official social media pages posted and then pulled a teaser for a new device that promised ‘the future of wearables’ – and there’s been plenty of speculation online as to what the teaser could be referring to.
Based on the brief glimpse we get in the teaser image, it looks like the upcoming device could be a slim smartwatch rather than the Whoop competitor Garmin is rumored to be working on – but we won’t know for sure until Garmin makes it official.
5. ChatGPT got a voice mode upgrade
The voice mode inside ChatGPT now works much more seamlessly with the text mode, allowing you to more easily switch between them. We’ve already given the new interface a whirl and have been impressed by how much it improves the user experience of the AI bot.
We’ve got all the details you need to know about the newly revised and improved voice mode, including how to switch back to the old interface and exactly what the differences are if you’re signed up to one of the ChatGPT subscription plans, compared to free users.
4. Insta360’s all-seeing drone got a launch date
Insta360 has a new 360-degree drone called the Antigravity A1, which should provide some spectacular in-flight views and some great after-images and videos. The drone was actually announced in August, but now we also have an on-sale date.
You’ll be able to place your order for the Antigravity A1 on Thursday, December 4th – and it’ll be available worldwide, so you should be able to grab one. Meanwhile, DJI is heavily rumored to be working on its own 360-degree drone device.
3. OpenAI’s first gadget took a step closer to reality
It’s no longer a secret that OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, in collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, are working on a device that will let you carry ChatGPT around with you at all times—but we’re still waiting to find out what it will look like and what it will cost.
These questions remain unanswered, but we do know that the gadget is nearing a launch. Altman has now gone on record, saying the device should feel like a “cabin by a lake” compared to an iPhone – whatever that means – and will launch within the next few years.
2. DJI warned us about its impending US ban
Time is quickly running out for DJI to avoid having new products banned in the US – not because any safety audit has found it to be a threat to US national security, but because no safety audit has taken place at all, with a December 23 deadline fast approaching.
DJI has now posted a full update on the current situation for its users, asking for their help in avoiding a ban. Find out what the ban will mean for DJI if it eventually goes into effect, and it will happen to the products you’ve already purchased after that date.
