- Windows 11 24H2 now has better security levels
- This is down to Microsoft that improves the scripting engine in us
- As a result, hackers will have it more difficult to discover and utilize utilities in Windows 11
Windows 11 just got a step to tighten security, but Microsoft has only applied this to the latest version, 24h2.
So if you haven’t yet upgraded to Windows 11 24h2 – maybe because you’ve heard of some of the errors in this version of Desktop us – it’s now a good time to finally pull the trigger (especially considering that some smart new features have just arrived).
Neowin reports that Microsoft announced a switch in the default scripting engine in Windows 11, from JScript -Runtime to the newer Jcript9Legacy.
If it sounds like gobbledegook, it’s long and short of the fact that this is the engine running Jcript, Microsoft’s own roof on JavaScript for use in Windows (and Internet Explorer back during the day).
Any apps or web pages that utilize Jcript will be more performing with the new version, and security will get a boost – there will be less chance that holes in JScript will appear in Windows 11 that attackers can benefit from.
Microsoft explains: “Jcript9Legacy is designed to be more compatible with modern web standards, which helps mitigate the risk of scripting across the site (XSS) and other web -based attacks.
“The new engine contains advanced security features such as improved handling of JavaScript objects and stricter execution policies, making it more difficult for malicious manuscripts to utilize the system.
“By replacing JSCRIPT.DLL with Jcript9Legacy.dll, the operating system can better defend against a wider range of security threats, which ultimately provides a safer environment for users.”
Analysis: Make life harder for hackers
All this happens in the background, so you will not notice any difference for your experience on the desktop. However, you will be more secure with Windows 11 24h2 now (without having to do anything).
As Neowin points out, Windows has been vulnerable to the exploitation of the gear of this scripting engine in the past – there was a mistake that enabled the execution of external code (an attacker who externally run code on the host -pc to dishonest ends) a year ago. Of course, it was patched, but having Jcript with much tighter defense by default, so fresh attacks are less likely to succeed in the first place is obviously worth much.
So Windows 11 24h2 now has tighter security than 23h2 by default, and this is a good enough reason to consider an upgrade if you have hung back. And I get why you may also be careful, considering the spread of some quite ugly (and odd) bugs that plague those who made the leap into 24h2 (especially players). However, these glitches have settled down something – so it is perfectly possible that you do not run into any stumble blocks at this time.
At one point, of course, you will have to upgrade to version 24H2 anyway – Microsoft recently made the update mandatory. In fact, Windows 11 25H2 is now on the horizon (packing the same security improvement that we naturally see here).
