IMF assesses governance, corruption in the public sector

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) held meetings on Wednesday with officials from the auditor in Pakistan (AGP), the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) to carry out a management and corruption assessment.

Sources revealed that the IMF mission was informed of transparency and the audit process in the public sector. The mission was informed that Parliament serves as the highest forum for auditing and accountability in the public sector. In addition, the opposition has authority to revise government institutions where the head of the public accounting committee is nominated by the opposition leader.

FBR officials provided a briefing on digitization and tax reform aimed at ensuring transparency in the tax system. Meanwhile, the SECP representatives assessed IMF on measures taken to increase the ease of doing business in the stock market and business.

The IMF mission also held meetings with officials from the Ministry of Climate Change and the Ministry of Housing and Works.

In particular, the IMF has been in Pakistan for about a week to carry out extensive management and corruption assessment. This includes a review of the process of appointing judges, legal integrity and legal independence.

This is the first detailed mission of its kind – Pakistan’s management and corruption diagnostic assessment – which began on Thursday. The evaluation is set to end Friday, the government told and diplomatic sources of Express Pakinomist.

During his stay in Pakistan, the IMF team meets with representatives from at least 19 Ministry of Government, departments and state institutions, including the legal commission in Pakistan and the Supreme Court in Pakistan.

The focus of the mission remains on the rule of law, anti -corruption measures, financial supervision, elimination of deeply anchored interests in the state’s management structure and combating money laundering, according to sources.
