IMF -Visit begins Friday to help with Pakistan’s budget from 2025-26

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) -Team begins its visit to Pakistan tomorrow (Friday) to help the preparation of the federal budget for the coming fiscal year 2025–26.

According to sources, the IMF delegation will hold discussions with Pakistani officials on future tax measures, revenue strategies and expenditure control expenses. Lectures will also cover the award for development expenses in the next budget.

The federal budget for FY2025–26 is expected to be presented in the first week of June. The IMF team will cooperate with Pakistani authorities to complete budget proposals.

The Ministry of Finance has estimated a significant increase in tax collections from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), which sets the income target for the coming financial year for RS15,270 billion.

This marks an increase of RS2,300 billion compared to the current financial year.

In the previous fiscal year, FBR RS9.311 billion collected in taxes. For FY2025–26, direct tax collection is projected to RS6,570 billion compared to the current year’s target of RS5,512 billion.

Errlier, the federal government met another condition for the IMF and approved the establishment of offices for the Director -General for Special Measures and two Directors in the FBR headquarters for coordination with field formations to tackle tax evasion.

The message also mentioned that these measures will help remove complexities leading to a decrease in revenue and eliminating unnecessary obstacles in the tax collection process.

Last month, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said that conversations between Pakistan and the IMF for over $ 1 billion tranche remained success.

The Minister of Finance gave the declaration during a meeting of the Prime Minister’s House, which Shehbaz Sharif was chairman of hearing the complaints of business, according to the government sources.

Shehbaz Sharif asked from his finance minister if the IMF handed over the Memorandum of Economic and Economic Policies (MEFP) to Pakistan – the set of political documents that define the conditions for loan tranches.
