- Immutable Backup Storage is the best protection of ransomware
- Research shows that backups are almost always targeted in ransomware -attack
- Ransomware is increasing already in 2025
Ransomware -attacks in the first quarter of 2025 set new items, increased by 84% in the same period of 2024.
In addition, ransomware is often talked about as an attack that companies should expect to be affected by two -thirds of organizations experiencing an attack over the past two years.
But that is not all the downfall and gloom, as new research from backup storage provider object first shows that 81% of the decision makers agree that unchanging backup storage is the best protection of ransomware.
Segmentation, zero trust and unchangeable storage
While having a 3-2-1 backup strategy is a start when it comes to ransomware protection, the object also reveals that 96% of organizations have suffered a ransomware attack for the past two years, their databacks targeted as part of at least one attack where one in ten who saw their backup storage targeted at each attack.
While there is a general consensus that unchanging backup storage is likely to be the best way to protect against ransomware, only 59% of organizations actually implement this type of storage and only 58% have multiple copies of their data in separate places. In addition, 61% of respondents believe that IT security hardening offers adequate protection against ransomware attacks.
Object first recommends that companies adopt a violation of mentality and pair this with zero principles of trust and unchanging backup storage. To do this, companies need to segment their networks to minimize the potential explosion radius for an attack along with using approval mechanisms for log-ins, such as multifactor authentication and identity access management practices. In addition, each user must only have access to the files and applications they need for their specific workload.
Immutable Backup Storage helps protect against ransomware attacks by storing data in a way that they cannot be changed or deleted. Traditionally, these have been hard drives or other storage media used to back up data and then be stored in an ‘air -gifted’ environment that has no connection to the outside world. But with clouds that are flowering, unchanging sky storage is now also an option.
