Islamabad:
Imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize over his rule and efforts for human rights and democracy.
The announcement was made the other day by members of the Pakistan World Alliance (PWA) – a advocate group founded last December – which also belongs to the Norwegian political party party Sentrum.
“We are pleased to announce on behalf of the party Sentrum that in alliance with someone with the right to nominate, Nominated Mr Imran Khan has the former prime minister in Pakistan at the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with Human Rights and Democracy in Pakistan,” the party Sentrum said at X.
In 2019, Khan was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote peace in South Asia.
Each year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee receives hundreds of nominations, after which they choose the winner through a long eight-month process.
Khan, also the founder of Pakistan’s most important opposition Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) party, has been jailed since August 2023. In January he was sentenced to 14 years in prison in a case related to the abuse of authority and corruption.
It was the fourth major case where the former prime minister has been convicted. Three previous beliefs related to selling state gifts, leaking state secrets and illegal marriage were overturned or suspended by courts.
Khan lost power after a vote without confidence in April 2022. He denies all charges against him and called them politically motivated.
