Pakistan’s Indus Waters Commissioner Mehar Ali Shah on Sunday rejected India’s claim to “terminate” the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), saying the treaty remains fully valid under international law.

He expressed these views during a program on a private television channel.

“As far as keeping the treaty in abeyance, the word ‘abeyance’ is not recognized under international treaty law. It is a coined term because we believe that India understands that it cannot suspend, break or terminate the treaty,” he said.

He warned that India’s continued refusal to cooperate within the rules-based framework was “alarming”.
