- President Trump has threatened Apple with a 25% duty as it does not make its units in the United States
- This could see a price increase for iPhones, iPads, Macs and more
- Trump suggests a 50% duty on goods from the European Union, which may also have a knock-on effect on product prices
US President Donald Trump has said he “recommends” a 50% duty on the European Union, starting June 1st. And these tariffs could hit Apple as it does not manufacture its iPhones and other devices in the United States.
“I have long ago informed Tim Cook from Apple that I expect their iPhone, which will be sold in the United States of America, will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India or somewhere else,” Trump released his truth on social media. “If not the case, a customs of at least 25% of Apple to the US must be paid thanks for your attention to this case!”
If such a duty comes to execution, the cost of iPhones may increase to compensate for the increased tariffs.
Even if Apple were to move its presentation of iPhones wholesale to the United States, it would very likely represent a huge initial cost of setting up as well as a long math and running work expenses. So it could also see that Apple has to increase the price of its products, both existing and probably upcoming.
The next Big Apple product launches are probably the iPhone 17 and the so-called iPhone 17 Air. If the Trump administration is pursuing these tariffs, both phones may have a launch price that can swing even the most dedicated iPhone fans.
We have approached Apple for comment, but have not yet heard from the company.
Turbulent Customs Rates
While the Trump administration withdrew from some of the most aggressive proposed tariffs, which were paused by 90 from the beginning of April, considering the huge market upheaval they caused; A remarkable example was US pre -orders for Nintendo Switch 2, which was parried when the Japanese game giant -saved protection prices are changing in the light of importing its upcoming console to the states.
Mutual tariffs from nations affected by Trump’s tariffs caused huge disturbance in markets, and while things were simmering down in the weeks that followed, there is still customs duties on the table that could make it difficult to do business with the United States difficult for businesses based in other nations.
Likes like Samsung have a great presence in the United States, but the South Korean company is producing its units outside America and Trump’s Traffics could make imports of the Galaxy S25 and the probable upcoming Samsung Galaxy S26 more expensive. A probable knock-on effect of it would be for Samsung to increase the prices of its devices where costs are effectively transferred to consumers.
With inflation that causes the cost of all kinds of products to rise, with Trump’s tariffs, we could see the prices of technically rise. So my suggestions are to make use of Memorial Day offers while still getting units at acceptable prices.
Of course, the fell of here could be too difficult to swallow, so Trump may end up not looking through such threats, especially against Apple, as it is one of the US trillion dollars companies.
