- Apple’s Wallet -App got a large iOS 26 -Update on WWDC 2025
- There are new features for travel, from passport to boarding passes
- Virtual car keys also come to multiple vehicles
At its WWDC 2025 event earlier this week, Apple took the time to show some new features that came to its wallet in iOS 26. This could make it easier than ever to manage your passports, boarding passes and more, and there are also new additions coming to connected cars that use virtual car keys using wallet.
For starters, Apple Wallety adds the opportunity to save virtual passports. Apple says this “is not a replacement for a physical passport and cannot be used for international journey and border crossing instead of a US passport.” Still, it can be used on different TSA control points “For identity verification purposes during domestic trips.” Right now, unfortunately, it’s limited to US passports.
When we talk about travel, the wallet can now give you more information about your stored boarding passes. These include live activities that show your flight’s progress, maps to your assigned terminal and luggage checkpoint and information about your arrival terminal, gate, luggage requirements and more.
Wallet’s upgrades are not only limited to airline travel as it is now able to display driver’s license and state IDs for age and identity verification websites. This currently works with services such as Chime, Turo, Uber Eats and US Bank, plus Arizona MVD, Georgia DDS and Maryland MVA.
Apple intelligence and car keys
Thirdly, the wallet has also been updated with Apple Intelligence, which can now be used to identify, summarize and display order -tracking info as it finds in your E emails. The iOS 26 update also means you can pay in installments or with rewards when making purchases in the store using the Wallet app.
However, the wallet folder is not only used for purchases and travel – it can also store virtual car keys that lock a connected vehicle using your phone. With iOS 26 it comes to several manufacturers, as discovered by 9to5Mac.
Currently, virtual car keys operate with 20 vehicle brands, including Audi, BMW, Hyundai and Volvo. On WWDC 2025, Apple said 13 more brands would soon add the feature, with manufacturers such as Cadillac, GMC and Porsche on the list (roll down on the full list). We do not yet know when these brands will add support, but with Apple teasing them as soon, hopefully we will not have long to wait.
It all means that Apple’s wallet app becomes much more capable when iOS 26 is launched in the fall (although you can already try it by downloading iOS 26 developer Beta).
Whether you are traveling or paying for something on the go, it can be a great option and with Apple agreed to let users choose different payment apps in the EU, we could see some of these features come to rival iOS apps.
