- IPVanish revealed its first RAM servers in 19 cities in 9 countries with plans to expand to all 148 locations in 2027
- Ram-Kun servers enhance privacy by drying all data on reboot while also increasing durability and making updates faster
- This rollout puts ipvanian in line with rivals that already use Ram-Kun servers, though not all Top VPN providers embrace this method
IPVanish just another step towards strengthening its privacy game: It only launched RAM servers that marked a big shift in how its network works.
Unlike traditional VPN servers that depend on hard drives (HDDs), only RAM servers are automatically rashed on restart or shutdown. This means your data is never stored long.
The company joins some of the best VPN providers by going diskless and targeting improved privacy. While release only affects servers in 19 cities in 9 countries at the time of writing, IPVanish plans to swap all its servers to Ram-Kun within the next two years.
How does Ram-Kun VPN servers work?
There is a big difference between traditional VPN servers and those running on Random Access Memory (RAM).
Most VPN servers run on HDDs. Ipvanian assures that these servers remain safe thanks to the encryption of full disk and its policy without lodges, but they come with some disadvantages that change to RAM can help address.
With RAM-Kun servers, all data is stored in volatile memory that wipes clean on each restart. This means that there is no lingering information that is left, even if a server is seized and updates can be implemented faster because there is no physical drive to revive. The result is stronger privacy by design.
That said, while the fact that servers are wiped out on each reboot is good news, IPVanish seems to already do a good job of not saving your private data. A recent audit confirmed that the company never stores user data that minimizes the risk of leaks.
“This initiative complements our ongoing obligation to robust privacy standards, including third-party non-Log audits, regular transparency reports, anonymization of account and minimal data collection upon registration,” said IPVanish Chief Commercial Officer, SUBBU STHANU.
In addition to privacy, without moving parts, Ram-Kun is often more durable and easier to maintain or upgrade.
Which IPVanish servers is only RAM?
IPVanish started rolling out its Ram-Kun servers and launched them in 19 locations to begin with. Right now these privacy -focused servers are available in AustraliaAt FranceAt GermanyAt Hong KongAt JapanAt HollandAt Swedenand USA.
IPVanish has a server tracker that gets updated when more servers are added.
You can connect to these servers if you use IPVanish’s latest iOS or MacOS apps. However, users running Windows or Android will have to wait as these options are added by the end of 2025. IPVanish to Apple TV and four TVs will be upgraded by the beginning of 2026.
Ultimately, IPVanish plans to transfer all its server network (in 148 locations across the globe) to Ram-Kun in 2027. This can help it compete against some of the most secure VPN providers.
Other RAM-Kun serve VPNs
We’ve gone through every single leading VPN service out there (and some that aren’t quite up to pairs) and we’ve seen some of our favorites switch to Ram-Kun servers over the years.
Remarkable mentions here include ExpressVPN with its Trustedserver technology that runs completely on RAM, as well as NordVPN and private Internet access (PIA). There are clear advantages to the technology that, for many of these providers, serve as an extra layer of security on top of already strict security measures.
However, not all the best rated VPNs lean for Ram-Kun servers.
Protonvpn, which is also very rated by our reviewers for privacy and security, chooses not to use Ram-Kun servers. Proton explains that even RAM storage can be targeted by threat actors if the server is turned on and encryption with full debate achieves the same kind of protection.
