As a trillion-dollar company with one of the most recognizable brands in the world, I don’t think Apple has much to worry about. But when I looked at the results of a recent poll I ran asking you, dear readers, if you use Apple Intelligence, the results made me grunt an ‘oops’.
That’s because a whopping 96% of poll respondents chose “no, it’s not for me,” leaving just 4% to choose “yes, it’s pretty good” as the answer.
Still, I never find myself really using Apple Intelligence with any gusto. I keep notification views on just for the hell of it, even though they aren’t exactly the most accurate. Occasionally, the summary will misinterpret a cluster of messages and serve up a few words that put a sense of dread or panic in me until I properly open a message or email and find that everything is fine.
But I’m just a tired man who might be a little tired of phones; those of you who are more actively engaged in the latest smartphone software features may require much more from AI tools. And it seems to me that Apple is still doing its iPhone users a disservice.
“Apple can’t figure out their AI strategy to save their lives,” said one commenter who went by the laughfactory. “I love Apple stuff, but it’s VERY off-base on AI.”
I’d say the commenter has a point, and with such a high percentage of people not looking favorably on Apple Intelligence, I’d also say Apple has reason to be a bit embarrassed, even though it’s unlikely to be hit by such a failure in a significant monetary way.
And since there’s a move towards ‘AI phones’ and other actually smart tech, I think Tim Cook and his Cupertino crew should be a little concerned that Apple might be left behind in the AI world.
There is hope on the horizon with the news that Apple will tap into Google Gemini to give Siri and Apple Intelligence a boost in smarts, but that hasn’t happened yet. And now that iOS 27 is rumored to be delayed, Siri could soon become one of Apple’s biggest embarrassments ever.
