Islamabad Court provides bail to journalist Waheed Murad

The District and Sessions Court in Islamabad on Friday awarded bail to journalist Waheed Murad, who had been arrested in a case registered under the law on the prevention of electronic crimes (PECA).

Murad was presented to the court today after completing a two-day physical custody, Express News reported.

Officials from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) produced him for the legal magistrate Abbas Shah, who ordered Murad to be sent to jail for judicial decision after the hearing.

During the hearing, the legal magistrate asked Abbas Shah about the material recovered by the FIA, as Waheed Murad’s lawyer, Iman Mazari, said that Murad had quoted the words of Akhtar Mengal in a social media post.

Another lawyer, Hadi Ali Chatha, further clarified that Murad’s first tweet was based on Mengal’s statement.

After hearing the arguments, the court approved Murad’s bail on the occasion against RS50,000 Bail bonds.

Previously, a petition was filed by Waheed Murad’s mother -in -law through Attorneys Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha, who sought the recovery of the missing journalist. The petition appointed several senior officials as respondents, including domestic secretary, defense secretary, Islamabad’s Inspector of Police and Station House Officer (SHO) at Karachi Company Police Station.

A complaint about the incident was filed at Karachi Company Police Station; However, no Formula Fir was recorded.

The petition called for immediate action to locate and recover Murad, while also seeking litigation against those responsible for his alleged abduction.
