The last of us Co-ShowRunner Neil Druckmann has made the shock decision to go back from working on HBO’s TV adaptation.
In a statement released yesterday (July 2), Druckmann confirmed that he gave the project after two seasons. Druckmann’s departure, however, has nothing to do with how bad The last of us Season 2 was received among general audiences. Instead, Druckmann steps aside to focus on his responsibilities as a study head and president of Naughty Dog – the company that originally created The last of us Video games.
“I’ve made the difficult decision to move away from my creative commitment to the last of us at HBO,” Druckmann revealed. “With work completed in Season 2 and before any meaningful work starts in Season 3, it is now the right time for me to transfer my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and instructing our exciting next game Intergalactic: The heretical prophetTogether with my responsibility as a study head and creative leader.
“To create the show has been a career high point. It has been an honor to work with [co-showrunner] Craig Mazin for executive products, directly and write on the last two seasons. I am deeply grateful for the thoughtful approach and dedication that the talented role crew and crew took to adapt The last of us part in and the continued adaptation of The last of us part II“
Mazin is now expected to lead only development on The last of us TV show that is set to run for another two seasons. Really, The last of us Season 3 was officially announced before Season 2 premiered and Mazin has since confirmed he needs a fourth season to adapt The last of us part II‘s full story.
Look for the ever -dampening light
It is unclear whether Druckmann always planned to call it ending on HBO and the Max TV Original after Co-Helming it for two seasons. What is clear though is it The last of us‘Sophomore season could not regain the spark that made its first season such a success.
Per. Review the Aggregation Website Rotten Tomatoes, The last of us Season 1 was a critical and commercial hit; The first post of the series, which earns 96% critical and 86% audience results respectively. While The last of us Season 2 was similarly praised by critics who gave it a 92% assessment, everyday viewers did not agree. Currently, the latest rate of what had been considered one of the best max shots has a paltry 37% audience approval assessment.
Things are not much better on the view figures in front. In May 2023, The last of us Set a new HBO Max record that saw each episode draw on average 32 million viewers in the United States alone. Its Season 1 final pulled the AA series high 8.2 million people when it debuted on March 12, 2023.
Despite Season 2 on average 37 million viewers in the 90-day period after its premiere, its final rose at only 3.7 million. It represents a decrease of 55% on its forear’s final mail. Obviously, the show’s creative team has a lot of work in front of them to make sure The last of us Season 3 regains people’s interest.
