Jailed PTI leaders push for Senate opposition leader

LAHORE:

A day after Mahmood Khan Achakzai was finally notified as the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, senior PTI leaders jailed in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail on Saturday called for the immediate appointment of a Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, appointing Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) post-Senator Allama, Raja Nasir.

In a joint letter, PTI leaders congratulated Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed and Umar Sarfraz Cheema Achakzai to assume the office of NA Leader of Opposition after months of delay.

The jailed leaders expressed hope that Achakzai, working under the leadership of PTI founder Imran Khan, would fulfill his responsibility to restore democracy and the constitution, uphold the rule of law, ensure the supremacy of the judiciary and protect the fundamental rights of citizens and political workers.

They also expressed expectations that Achakzai would initiate consultations aimed at steering Pakistan out of a protracted political and economic crisis spanning the past four years.

The PTI leaders pointed to an “unwarranted delay” in the appointment of the NA opposition leader and stressed that the opposition leadership in the Senate should now be filled “immediately”.

Earlier in the day, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the process would move forward once the procedural hurdles are cleared.
