The Legal Commission for Pakistan (JCP) has extended the period of employment for the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench until November 30, 2025, according to a statement from the supreme court.
The decision was made during a JCP meeting held in the Supreme Court building in Islamabad. The session was led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi.
According to the statement, JCP held two separate meetings on Thursday to consider questions related to the constitutional benches from the Supreme Court and the High Court of Sindh, as well as evaluations of legal performance.
At the first meeting, JCP approved the extension of the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench until November 30, 2025.
“As part of this initiative, the JCP chairman formed a broad-based committee of representatives from the judiciary, parliament, the director and the legal society to prepare rules for evaluations of legal performance,” the statement states.
At the second meeting, the supreme legal body extended by majority that the constitutional benches from Sindh High Court (SHC) for six months, with effect from July 23, 2025.
As part of the changes, two new judges – Justice Adnan Iqbal Chaudhry and Justice Jaffar Raza – were appointed to replace Justice Agha Faisal and Justice Sana Akram Minhas.
In a separate development, the Supreme Court rejected the plays on Thursday, which were filed against the transfer of judges from three high courts to Islamabad High Court and referred to them as constitutional, while they gave up that Justice Sarfraz Dogar can continue working as IHC’s functioning Chief Justice.
The verdict was announced by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, who was on his way to the five-members constitutional bench petitions filed by five IHC judges, Karachi Bar Association (KBA), IHC Bar Association and others against the transfer of Justice Sarfraz Dogar from Lahore High Court, Justice Khadim Hussain Singh Court, and Justice Muham as Lahore High Court, Justice Khadim Hussain Somro from Sindh High Court, and Justice Muham’s Soif from Thehamm From The Lahore from The Lahore Rette Balochistan High Court. The three judges were among those transferred to IHC.
The bench also includes Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, Justice Salahuddin Panhwar and Justice Shakeel Ahmed.
