The New York Jets legend Nick Mangold announced on social media that he needs a kidney transplant.

The former center said he was diagnosed with “a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease” in 2006, the same year he became draft No. 29 in total by Jets.

“I always knew that this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time. Unfortunately, I don’t have any family who is able to donate at this time, so that’s why I reach you out, our new jets and Ohio State community. I need a kidney donor with type O-blood,” the 41-year-old wrote.

“I am deeply grateful to anyone who would consider donating. Most of all, I am grateful to my family who has been my rock every step on the road. This situation has reminded me of how lucky I am to have such a fantastic family, friends and communities behind me.

“Although this has been a tough stretch, I remain positive and focused on the path in front. I look forward to better days and soon come back to full strength. I’ll be seeing Metlife Stadium & The Shoe very soon.”

Mangold spent his entire 11-year career with Jets and made seven Pro Bowls. He was a two-time first-team all-pro election and also made another team.

He won a national championship with Buckeyes in 2002, his first year, and was introduced to Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022.
