Islamabad/Muzaffarabad:
The water wave in the Jhelum River subsided on Sunday when it flowed into the Mangla Dam, one day after he entered Chakothi in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) from the control line (LOC), officials said.
The water level in the Jhelum River was registered at 25,166 CUSERCS – approx. three feet above normal. On Saturday, the river level had risen by 7 to 8 feet after India released water in the river.
Deputy Commissioner of Mirpur District, AJK, said the influx of water to Mangla Dam was registered at 47,100 CUSSCS, while the outflow was at 32,000 CUSSCS. He added that there was still plenty of capacity to store more water in the dam.
“There is still a serious lack of water in the dam. The current water level is 1,130 feet, while the maximum capacity is 1,242 feet. On this day last year the water level was 1,144 feet,” he noted.
On Saturday, like India, who had blown hot and cold after the Pahagam-Falm-Flag Operation, experienced a rude awakening from its high ambitions to block Pakistan’s water instead released a sudden wave in the Jhelum River in panic.
Nevertheless, the sudden release triggered a high -level flood, causing fear and destruction among local communities overnight.
The Muzaffarabad administration declared an emergency in the water as the rising waters caught the residents away.
The Jhelum River snakes from Anantnag -District in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) to Pakistan through Uri, Hattian Bala and Chakothi in AJK.
Authorities warned residents near the river to remain cautious and avoid venturing close to the banks. A ban on swimming and transporting livestock was also introduced near the shortage of Dam’s Banks.
State’s disaster management authority Saeed Qureshi said the water level in the Jhelum River had fallen. “The water is three meters above normal in the river. The level also rises due to melting snow in the middle of rising temperature,” added Qureshi.
