A joint investigative team (JIT) has called Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) leaders Omar Ayub and Aleema Khan to interrogate in a study related to alleged negative propaganda on social media, expressed Express News on Wednesday with reference to sources.
According to officials, the JIT sent the call to Ayub and Aleema as part of a study of digital content considered to be contrary to Pakistan’s cyber law.
Aleema Khan has been instructed to appear today on March 12, while Omar Ayub has been called for interrogation tomorrow, March 13.
The federal government formed JIT under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes, 2016. The team is led by Islamabad’s inspector of the police.
Sources claim that investigators have collected evidence related to the accusations before issuing the subpoena.
Further details of the nature of the alleged propaganda and the possible legal consequences remain unclear. Neither Omar Ayub nor Aleema Khan have publicly commented on the case.
Last December, the government launched a strict crash against individuals who spread propaganda about the state and its institutions on social media, with authorities that took rapid action to limit the spread of fake news.
Authorities identified 12 suspects involved in circulating false information and propaganda. Firls have been filed against them with further litigation.
The people identified in the crash include Mehmood Zeeshan Sajid, Faheem Khan, Muhammad Owais, Manocher, Aziz Ahmed, Saad Adnan Khurshid, Muhammad Asad, Malik Ismatullah Khan, Enayatullah, Sultan Mehmood Khan, Kalemullah and Aurangzeb.
The suspects come from different regions, including Karachi, Sanghar, Quetta, Pishin, Qila Abdullah and Swat. They are accused of having participated in activities that defend the government, encourage rebellion and interfere with state affairs through inflammatory positions.
