He’s been the rap-battling “Doctor of Thuganomics,” a chest-pounding, dog tag-draped military upstart and—proving that even the best can still go wrong—the world’s least compelling heel, and this Saturday, 23 years after his debut on SmackDown in 2002, John Cena and his will run around to the squared for the last time.
Gunther earned the right to face the man who brought us the “Attitude Adjustment” and “Five Moves of Doom” on his swan song by winning the Last Time Is Now tournament, defeating Je’Von Evans, Carmelo Hayes, Solo Sikoa and LA Knight. Incidentally, the former two-time world heavyweight champion sent Goldberg into retirement in July.
As is often the case, the fairytale ending was not for Goldberg, even though at 48, Cena is 10 years his junior, a recent Intercontinental Champion, a 17-time World Champion and a Triple Crown winner. He’s also one of the most iconic WWE Superstars of all time, arguably the promotion’s greatest ever asset, and he’s repeatedly emphasized that there won’t be a comeback – this really is the last dance.
