Oklahoma -quarterback John Mate, a Heisman Trophy -Favorite, needs surgery on his right caste hand -a big battle for The Sooners’ violation.

However, Mate is expected to return “this season” for The Soners, though they will have to stay fluid until then.

Head coach Brent Venables announced Mate News Tuesday, a surprising situation after Oklahoma’s 24-17 win over Auburn.

They are soon 4-0 to start the season.

“After hearing medical experts, it became clear that the operation is the best option for John and his short and long future,” Venables said in a statement. “He is extremely disappointed that he will miss some game actions, but is eager to fix the problem and move on.

“As he is with everything, we know that he will be aggressive with his rehabilitation and work to return to the field as soon as possible.”

Mate is reportedly dealing with a broken bone in his right hand per day. Espn, though it is unknown how the damage occurred. He is expected to miss about a month for Sooners.

Oklahoma said Mate suffered the injury during the first quarter of the victory over Auburn, though he continued to play. He went 24-of-36 through the air in 271 yards with a touchdown pass. He also scored on a rush attempt.

While Soners are not playing this coming Saturday as they are in a bye week, Michael Hawkins Jr., Mate’s second backup, is expected to start against Kent State on October 4th.

Mate also lacks the highly expected Red River rivaling game against Texas on October 11.

Of course, it’s hard to lose a potential Heisman finalist to overcome, but Oklahoma must have Hawkins step up with SEC positions and college -football -Playoff -implications that are at stake.

After the Texas game, Oklahoma will face South Carolina and a point of ranked teams including Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and LSU.

Mate, who transferred to Oklahoma after three seasons in Washington State, leads SEC in passing shipyards (1,215) and finishes (95) over four matches.
