Former boxing star Julio César Chávez defended his son on Monday after his arrest of US immigration officials outside his Los Angeles home.
Julio César Chávez Jr. was accused of exceeding his visa and lying on a green card application. In addition, he has an active arrest warrant for his arrest in Mexico for alleged weapons and drug trafficking and possible ties to the Sinaloa cartel.

The oldest Chávez talked to Mexican media about his son.
“It’s complicated, there’s a lot of talk, but we’re calm because we know my son’s innocence,” he told the El Heraldo newspaper. “My son wants to be all you want whatever, but he is not a criminal and less everything he is accused of.”
A study of the younger boxer started in 2019 after a complaint filed by the United States against the Sinaloa Cartel for Organized Crime, Human Trade, Arms Trade and Drug Trade, Mexico Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero said Sunday.

Chávez Jr.’s lawyers requested at least five injunctions in Mexico, but they were all rejected because the boxer was in the United States, Gertz Manero said.
“He knows a lot of people, we live in Culiacan, it would be impossible not to know all the people doing illegal things, but it doesn’t matter,” said Chávez Sr. “In my time I met everyone and they didn’t come after me.”
He promised his son will fight chargers if he was transferred to Mexico.

“Why did they let him fight? My son has been paying taxes in the US for three years, and now in Mexico they accuse him of money laundering,” added the oldest Chávez. “Yes, he knows these people, but that doesn’t mean I’m a drug dealer. Let’s trust the law.”
