Bill Maher believes Cancel Culture plays a key role in Hollywood. His alleged evidence is Karla Sofía Gascón’s Kanye West-like tweets.
On his show, Real time with Bill Maher, He claimed that Emilia Pérez was a warm favorite to win, but the scandal that its leading star had caused led to the rise of the stars of her rival film, AnoraIn the best movie category.
“There are people who say that cancellation of culture is not a real thing, and I will say to them, ‘it just happened to Oscars,'” the host of the late night said.
“You may not think it happened, but the movie that would win it all was Emilia Pérez,” he noted.
Bill claimed that “Hollywood loved” the idea that they “finally wanted a person who was a trans person” win best actress when Karla became the first open trans woman to be nominated for an Oscar award.
He described her old tweets that triggered the scandal and said they were “a toddler” and added, “It was a little Kanye-Esque, just what’s on the brain comes out.”
“And then some things she said, which is just, ‘Oh yeah. Do you know what? I have said such things. ‘It’s just very, very honest. But of course, the waking community was too far, ”noted the 69-year-old.
“And this movie, it had to win it all, it was the front runner, and she had to get everyone … suddenly there was out for lunch. And good news for Anora. That’s what happened. So yes, cancel culture is still with us. It might just be a little more subtle, ”Bill concluded.
