Karachi’s mayor Murtaza Wahab was involved in a lift accident while visiting Abbasi Shaheed Hospital on his official tour, Express News reported.
The incident took place when the mayor, together with the Deputy Mayor and other officials, boarded the lift during their hospital inspection.
Due to overfilling, the lift did not work and suddenly descent. Fortunately, all passengers, including the mayor, were unkind in the incident.
The hospital staff responded quickly, opened the lifting doors from the outside and evacuated everyone safely.
Earlier, a woman, Samia Arshad, had died after falling an elevator shaft in a hospital in Karimabad, federal B area, hours after birth to a baby girl.
She had been transferred to a stretcher of the hospital staff when the elevator unexpectedly moved, causing her to fall 20 meters. She had suffered mortal head injuries from the fall.
The hospital staff had not properly secured the victim and the elevator was allegedly in disrepair.
The woman’s family had decided not to pursue litigation at the time, but had expressed concern about the hospital’s use of defective elevators.
Sindh Healthcare Commission investigated the incident, but no formal complaint had yet been filed. The hospital had confirmed the police report of events and had stated that the lift was regularly maintained.
