Karachi: The residents of Metropolis woke up to a rather comfortable morning Sunday after the city received light showers for the small hours after several days of cloudy weather.

Light rain was reported in various areas of the city, including near airport, Malir, Gulistan-E-Jauhar, Shah Faisal, North Karachi, New Karachi, Surjani Town, Gulde-E-Maymar, Gulde-E-Iqbal, II Chundrigar Road, Pidc, Saddar and Burns Road.

The precipitation comes as Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms in Karachi with temperature expected to hover between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius.

Another monsoon system can also affect Sindh in late July, Met Office added.

It should be noted that one day the Sindh government canceled the local government holiday and activated contingency measures ahead of expected monsoon rains in Karachi.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the local government holidays were canceled and that events had been made to ensure immediate drainage of rainwater in vulnerable parts of the city.

The rain -bearing weather system was located above the southwestern Uttar Pradesh, India and moved towards Rajasthan, according to Weatherman. Analysts thought the system could begin to influence parts of Sindh, including Karachi, before Friday night or later that night.

If the system continues to move west, it can bring heavy rain to different districts in Sindh. Currently, moderate rain is expected in Karachi according to the forecast. Meteorologists closely monitor the orbit of the system and its potential effects on southern Pakistan in the coming days.

Apart from Karachi, the country as a whole is to witness monsoon rain with showers that cause destruction in different areas, resulting in at least 202 people – including 96 children – killing in various events, according to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The official data paints a gloomy image in which Punjab accounts for 123 of the total deaths. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 40 deaths, Sindh 21, Balochistan 16 and Islamabad and Azad Jammu and Kashmir reported one each.

The causes of death varied widely with at least 118 killed due to the collapse of house, 30 from flash flows and others due to drowning, lightning, electrocution and landslide.

The rain has injured more than 560 people, including 182 children.
