Karachi: Traffic accidents have risen over Karachi in 2025 and claims that 108 life-72 in urban areas and 24 in the suburbs-when dump-truck-related crashes are also rising.

A freight train collided with a trailer near Mai Kolachi, followed by an oil tanker that crashed into them from behind, according to police.

The influence crushed the front of the oil tanker and caught his driver inside. Rescue teams were sent to the stage to extract the driver from the wreck. After intensive efforts, rescuers successfully released the trapped driver.

Police, ranks and rescue teams were present at the scene and steered the situation. Authorities confirmed that there was no rail transition on the track where the accident occurred. The efforts to transfer oil from the damaged tanker were underway.

As a result of the accident, traffic on Mai Kolachi Road was seriously disturbed. Police confirmed that while the road that led from the boat pool to the Jinnah Bridge has been opened again, the route from Mai Kolachi to Boat Basin will remain closed.

Traffic was redirected from MT Khan Road to PIDC, while vehicles from the boat pool were redirected to Bilawal Chowrangi.

Authorities are still working to remove freight trains, trailer and oil tankers from the road.

In another tragic incident, a person was killed in a traffic accident in Malir’s Memon Goth.

Originally, rescue workers attributed the accident to a dumping collision; However, studies found no evidence of a dumping commitment. The identity of the deceased remains unknown.

Govt’s response to increasing accidents

Sindh’s Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon turned to the media on Thursday regarding measures that the provincial government has taken to fight the increasing number of traffic accidents. A meeting, chairman of the minister of chief, resulted in more decisions being made.

The Sindh government has a mandate for fitness and registration of all heavy traffic cars. In the future, all major transport vehicles must have a valid fitness certificate to operate on the roads. Vehicles without proper certification are prohibited to use.

Memon said the Water Board has also implemented a barcode system for all registered water tankers operating from authorized hydrants. Only vehicles that meet the required fitness standards are issued barcodes and any unregistered vehicles will be seized.

Furthermore, previously registered vehicles will review reassessment to ensure continued compliance with the safety regulations.

A 30-day delivery period has been assigned to heavy traffic cars to get fitness certificates.

In addition, the operational hours for dumping cars in Karachi have been revised. Previously allowed on roads from 23:00 to 18:00, dumpers will now only be allowed from 22:00 to 06:00 to facilitate overload and improve public security.

He emphasized that the responsibility lies with everyone, including the government, careless drivers and those who violate traffic laws.

He added that orders regarding the vehicle’s fitness are not new and that the government is planning to outsource the transport department.
