Karachis University Road has been closed to traffic after damage to a water pipeline during the construction of the bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, authorities said Monday.
The traffic police said the water board’s officials and machines had arrived near Old Sabzi Mandi to repair the damaged line.
The closure has disturbed the traffic between Hassan Square and New Town, forcing commuters to take alternative routes.
Vehicles coming from NIPA are redirected via EXPO turns, while from Essa Nagri they are raised against the stadium through Hassan Square Bridge.
Authorities have advised motorists to use alternative routes to avoid overload.
The BRT project has previously been investigated for infrastructure-related disorders. Previously, Sindh High Court (SHC) convened the mayor of Karachi and the Transport Secretary of concern about wood cutting along the BRT route.
The Forest Secretary told the court that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is responsible for trees in the city, while the forest department’s jurisdiction begins outside city limits.
The court sought a report from KMC on the case.
