Karachi:
A new culinary destination is opened in Keamari when Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) revealed the city’s first ‘Fish Food Street’, designed to promote local cuisine, tourism and cultural life in one of the oldest sea districts in Metropolis.
The inauguration ceremony on Sunday drew a large crowd, including residents, foodies and dignitaries from all over the political spectrum. Among those present were Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad, MPA Asif Khan, MPA Liaquat Askani, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, Mauripur -City Chairman Humayun Khan, Vice President Asif Kausar, City Council members and other elected representatives.
Bymester Murtaza Wahab, formally inaugurated Food Street, said Keamaris Fish Food Street is more than just a culinary hotspot – it’s a symbol of revitalization. “A new center for entertainment and taste has been created for the people of Karachi,” he said, highlighting the colorful aesthetics in the area with its lively umbrellas, decorative lighting and inviting night mosphere.
The mayor also declared that Food Street offers a rich number of local and traditional kitchen, especially fresh seafood and BBQ, serving both residents and tourists. Comfortable seating, family -friendly events and scenic surroundings aim to improve the overall visitor experience.
Mayor Wahab explained that the project includes 62,000 square meters of paving blocks, 35,000 square meters of tile, 25 Victorian style light bars and 1,400 running feet of new sewer lines. Two Grand Arch-style entrance gate with signage, 3,000 feet of Kerbstone, 100,000 square meters of road-lapping work and installation of 500 colorful umbrellas adds the charm and functionality of the room.
“This project gives citizens a unique recreational space where aesthetics and accessibility meet,” he said. “Under the direction of President Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, such human-centric projects are developed across Karachi without discrimination.”
He emphasized that Fish Food Street meets a long-term demand for Keamari residents who had hoped for a Madgade on par with Burns Road.
“Promises were given before, but never held,” said Mayor Wahab. “Now, under PPP’s governance, we are not just giving messages – we deliver.”
Looking ahead, the city’s mayor shared further development plans for Keamari and adjacent areas.
He announced progress in redirecting heavy port traffic away from residential areas via Shahrah-e-Bhutto to Kathore. The Qayyumabad to Quaidabad section is already operational and operates more than 12,000 vehicles daily, while the Kathore segment is inaugurated by Bilawal on December 31.
He also cited the restoration of key infrastructure, including Netty Jetty, Jinnah Bridge and ICI Bridge, all made under the current PPP-led government.
In addition to transport and food infrastructure, Mayor Wahab highlighted improvements in health, water supply, sanitation and sports facilities. He announced that a 100 MGD channel from Hub Dam will inaugurate on August 14, bringing much needed water to Keamari and Karachi’s western districts. He also referred to TP-3 wastewater treatment plants in Mauripur, which was developed to support both environmental protection and local fishermen.
Health services are also expanded in the area, with a SICVD satellite center recently opened in Baldia Town to provide heart care close to the home. For recreation and sports, a new sports complex in Mauripur Town is expected to open at the end of the year, while an RS1.2 billion complex in Baldia will be completed by March 2026.
Karachi confirms his commitment to inclusive development and said, “Karachi is a beautiful bouquet of society. It is not language or ethnicity that shares us – it is the thinking of division that needs to be rejected.” He urged all political parties to work together on a “charter of Karachi” for overall action on the city’s challenges.
The mayor announced the restoration of six historic markets in Karachi to preserve the inheritance of the city and added, “I was born here and I will continue to work for this city as if it is my own family. Karachi’s revival is underway – and everyone is invited to be part of it.”
