KP approves cannabis rules, free textbooks

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa cabinet has approved a supplementary grant RS1 billion for the scheme “Delivery of free textbooks and school bags in merged districts” and instructed the preparation of a comprehensive plan in this regard.

A marathon meeting in the cabinet was held on Thursday, led by chief minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur.

The cabinet also approved Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (cultivation, extraction, refining, manufacturing and sale of derivatives of cannabis plants for medical research, industrial and commercial purposes) rules, 2025. Regulatory framework will allow the provincial government to monitor cannabis production for medical and industrial use.

The cabinet approved a revision in the cost of the ‘Missing Basic Facility in Schools’ project under the conditional subsidy program and also revised the expenditure ceiling in the guidelines for Parent Teacher Council (PTC). The annual spending limit for PTCs has been increased from Rs.05 million to Rs.07 million with emphasis on transparent and efficient utilization of these funds.

In addition, the cabinet approved restoration and improvement of Grant-In-Aid for Deeni Madaris, which released RS100 million for the purpose.

In the healthcare sector, a new ‘SEHAT short transplant and implant scheme’ was launched. Under this initiative, the provincial government will cover the cost of bone marrow, liver and kidney transplants as well as cochlaim implant for eligible patients throughout the province.

The cabinet gave a waiver to the health department from standard procedures for leasing of local government property for the construction of civilian dispensers in polio-related super high risk union councils in Peshawar.

It also approved the merger of the Governor’s Inspection Team (Git) with the Provincial Inspection Team (PIT) as Git had become superfluous following the merger of FATA and the changes in the University Act, 2012.

Approval was granted for the construction of the remaining part of the northern Peshawar Ring Road, from Warsak Road to Nasir Bagh Road. The Minister of Main instructed the new section to be associated with the industrial property Hayatabad for better connection.

It also approved Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa-state servants who housing a Bill, 2025. According to the scheme, government employees will get a plot for the construction of houses properly.

The cabinet decided that instead of hiring legal adviser to the Anti-Narcotics Force Case Constitution (petition No. 11 of 2020) and others, in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the Attorney General Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa will defend the province. It also approved a grant of the RS30 million to KP bar Council.

The cabinet approved RS3.6 billion for the purchase of sanitary vehicles for 132 TMAs in the province. The cabinet emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness and protecting the environment in all areas.

To meet the growing water needs of Peshawar’s population, the cabinet approved the construction costs for the suction structure and the tunnel for a drinking water supply scheme from Mohmand Dam Doctimeting project to be financed by provincial resources.
