KU draws a line in the sand to protect its turf

Karachi University has taken decisive measures to protect its campus land and prevent future encroachments, reaffirming its commitment to protecting one of the city’s greatest educational spaces. The move comes after the cancellation of a controversial No Objection Certificate (NOC) for an illegally constructed petrol pump on the university premises. In a meeting with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi Deputy Commissioner East Nasrullah Abbasi and Director General Anti-Corruption Establishment Sindh Imtiaz Abro discussed follow-up measures to ensure long-term protection of the campus. The authorities emphasized that proper land demarcation and mutation should be implemented immediately and create a clear legal framework to prevent unauthorized construction in the future. Professor Dr. Iraqi praised the swift action of government officials and reiterated the university’s determination to secure all its land and assets permanently. He highlighted a specially convened syndicate meeting with one agenda, which laid the groundwork for a clear and enforceable strategy to tackle encroachment. The cancellation of the NOC and the university’s proactive measures mark a significant step towards protecting Karachi University’s campus, ensuring it remains a safe place for students, faculty and future generations. Syndicate approves key board nominations The Syndicate from Karachi University, under the leadership of Professor Dr. Iraqi, convened a meeting at the Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat to approve key nominations to various boards and committees and to recognize university staff for their role in protecting the campus from illegal encroachments. During the session, the syndicate approved the nomination of Sadia Salehuddin as its representative in the university’s selection committee. The professors Dr. Anila Amber Malik and Dr. Syed Shabbir-ul-Hasan was nominated to represent the Syndicate on the Board of Advanced Studies and Research. The syndicate members also praised Deputy Commissioner East Nasrullah Abbasi and Director General Anti-Corruption Sindh Imtiaz Abro for taking prompt steps to cancel the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for an illegal petrol pump on the university grounds. Recommendations were made to issue certificates of appreciation to employees who played a key role in securing the campus. The meeting also approved the reports and resolutions of the previous Syndicate session held on 18 October 2025 and concluded with prayers for the victims and speedy recovery of the injured from the tragic Gul Plaza fire.
