- A massive DDOS attack was recently detected during a major NHL event
- Attacks grew from 67 Gbps to nearly 1 tbps in twenty minutes
- Multive Sector strike used UDP, Vision, IP and TCP flooding techniques
CyberSecurity -the Qrator Labs company has claimed that it successfully depicted the largest DDOS attack, which was so far registered in 2025.
The attack on April 3 targeted a named online betting organization, which lasted about 90 minutes, which started at 1 p.m. 11:15 with a wave of 67 Gbps before escalating strongly to 217 Gbps with 11:23, and just topped cards of 1 Tbps at 965 Gbps with 11:36.
The activity then slowly dropped to 549 Gbps before 12:41, when the attack ended shortly after. The DDOS attack was the multi -rector in nature with a highlight of 965 Gbps in UDP flooding, 229 Gbps in vision flooding, 214 Gbps in IP flooding and 169 Gbps in TCP flooding.
Sports events are big goals
Qrator notes that the attack happened the same day that NHL star Alexander Ovechkin scored his 892. Goal and tied Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record. Ovechkin’s performance was probably the trigger for the attack as the online betting sector is especially vulnerable during major sporting events.
A similar pattern of attack was discovered during the UEFA European Football Championship in 2024, held in Germany, where spikes in DDOS activity also targeted online betting places.
“This new incident is a clear reminder that larger industry-specific events can be exploited by malicious actors. Businesses working with them, such as online betting platforms, have to prepare in advance to defend their digital infrastructure when attention is at its highest,” said Andrey Leskin, head of technology officer at Qrator Labs.
With great sporting moments that draw massive audiences online, betting platforms continue to be a main target for coordinated attacks like this one.
Other notable sporting events that will take place this year, which may prove to be a measure of similar DDOS strikes, includes the FIFA Club World Cup in the US and the World Cup for Athletics in Tokyo.
