Earlier in September 2024, General Ecillion Muhammad Asim Malik was appointed the new Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), as advertised by the government through the state Pakistan TV (PTV).

The new spy chief was to take responsibility for his role on September 30. In particular, the announcement of his appointment was made by PTV, a departure from previous practice, as such high -profile appointments were typically announced by the Prime Minister’s office or the military’s media wing.

General Bill of Muhammad Asim Malik, 59, is considered one of the Pakistani army’s most skilled officers, especially in Operational Command.

Prior to this appointment, he served as an adjutant general in the Army General Headquarters (GHQ) and monitored military administrative affairs, including legal and disciplinary affairs, for the past three years.

He has commanded an infantry division in Balochistan and an infantry brigade in South Waziristan, both regions that have been focal points for security challenges for almost two decades.

He is also the recipient of the prestigious honorary sword assigned to the top cadet on his course.

His academic background includes serving as chief instructor at National Defense University (NDU) and as an instructor at Command and Staff College, Quetta.

LT Gen Muhammad Asim Malik is the son of retired Lieutenant General Ghulam Muhammad Malik, who had prominent positions during his career in the 1990s.

Malik is a candidate from Fort Leavenworth (USA) and Royal College of Defense Studies (UK) and has also held key positions in the Military Operations Directorate.

Retired Lieutenant General Naeem Khalid Lodhi described him as a “quiet, yet highly respected officer.”

“Even as the General Adjutant, he performed considerable work for welfare for retired soldiers, especially about pensions and other related questions,” Gen Lodhi said.

Gen Asim Malik’s tenure as an adjutant general coincided with major political events, including the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the subsequent turmoil.

Following IMRAN’s detention staged supporters of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) protests that resulted in damage to public property and military installations.

A former colleague noted that Malik’s new role emphasizes the strong confidence that the military leadership has in him.

Founded in 1948, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) remains Pakistan’s leading intelligence agency.
