- Android Auto has a new free dash -cam -App
- It uses the car’s built -in cameras to catch the road
- Car manufacturers will need to customize the app to their cars
If you want to add some extra security to your car or keep an overview of what happens on the road while driving, then you’ve probably thought about picking up one of the best dash cams. But you may soon be able to rely on your car’s built -in cameras and Android Auto to do the job.
That’s because Google has recently rolled a new free Dashcam app via Android Auto, which car manufacturers can easily be integrated into the services their vehicles offer (stained by Android Authority).
A few cars already include Dash Cam services using their cameras, but these had to be designed by each car manufacturer.
With Google, which offers this generic service via Android Auto, many drivers – us included – hope that manufacturers who are not yet adding this kind of service to their vehicles will finally, because Google has made the process much simpler to them.
The documentation that Google has released is quite in -depth because it is aimed at software developers who want to customize its app to fit their vehicles so that we have analyzed through it and selected some highlights.
For example, the app recommends you to use external storage to hold video footage so that you do not instantly fill your car’s internal storage. We also know that the Dash Cam service starts automatically when it detects certain triggers, such as running over a certain speed. These customization options potentially allow you to design your ideal Dash -Cam setup depending on your needs.
Developers can also create messages for messages, limits on how long files will be saved before they are deleted, and a ‘streaming_module’ reference has us to believe that you may see your car’s Dash -Cam clip externally from another device.
Now Google’s Android Auto App system is not as perfect as an actual dash -cam.
First, this new system only works if your car has cameras and if it does, the cameras usually don’t look at what’s happening inside the car – something you can get from Dash Cams.
For another, you can’t just install Android Auto’s Dash Cam today – you will have to wait for your vehicle to get support for it in an update.
However, as multiple vehicles boast cameras to help with parking, basic self-driving capabilities, detection of road signs and other driver assistant features, this Android Auto update will be a major upgrade for many of our cars and could quickly become one of Android Auto’s best features.
