Luis Rubiales invited over unwanted kisses by female player, court rules

Luis Rubiales, the former Spanish Football Federation President, was found guilty on Thursday for sexual assault by a female player as he kissed her without her consent after the team’s victory in the woman’s World Cup in 2023.

Spain’s Supreme Court ordered Rubiales to pay a fine of around $ 10,400 and acquitted him of forced taxes, according to Reuters. He was also limited from going within 200 meters of the football player and communicating with her for a year.

Jenni Hermoso accused Rubiales of kissing her without her consent as Spain celebrated the team’s victory over England. Through the trial, Rubiales maintained that the kiss was consensus.

Hermoso said earlier this month that the moment “colored one of the happiest days of my life.”

Rubiales was squeezed out of his position as Spain’s football president in 2023 and retired while being banned by FIFA for three years despite an initial press conference in which he repeated he would not go down. Rubiales said in that speech that he was a victim of a “witch hunt” of “false feminists.”

Since the incident, Hermoso said she has had trouble escaping the limelight, especially in Mexico, where she plays for her club team between her duties for her country.

Formerly Spain Women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda, former sports director of Spain’s men’s national team, Albert Luque, and the Football Federation’s former marketing manager, Rubén Rivera, is also in trial to allegedly pushed Hermoso to defend Rubiales in public after the incident.

They were not found guilty, according to Reuters.
